John James MCCARTNEY died on 9 October 2019 at Lancaster Royal Infirmary following a fire at Gordons Working Men's Club, Springfield Street, Morecambe. Mr MCCARTNEY had been drinking at the club following his shift, where he worked as a cleaner. A fire occurred in the lounge area following a spark or light from Mr MCCARTNEY's lighter in the presence of propane gas. Mr MCCARTNEY tried to take the gas cannister outside after it ignited. The fire doors were not open and accessible, which contributed to his death. Appropriate measures were not in place to enable evacuation in the event of fire, which contributed to his death. The gas canister was stored inappropriately, which contributed towards his death. The risks of fire from the gas canisters were not managed as they should have been which contributed to his death.
